Microsoft is acquiring GitHub

Nevertheless, Nadella is one man, and many of his policies, particularly surrounding the companies hero products like Windows and Office, are deeply divisive (understatement).

The news, which we're expecting to be confirmed today after initial Bloomberg reports on Sunday night, has been the source of rumours since Friday. Microsoft is no stranger to ingesting huge companies. Last year, Microsoft surprisingly moved to the Git version-control system for Windows development.

By acquiring GitHub, Microsoft will have access to over 27 Million software developers many of whom are not thrilled by the acquisition for it might hinder decentralization of code which is one of the chief reasons that the platform thrives.

Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation.

The current CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, has been actively involved in courting coders and initiating coding initiatives since taking the helm at the company in 2014.

The companies have reportedly had several discussions about partnership in recent years, but those close to GitHub's decision told media outlets that talks have grown increasingly more serious. The platform hosts a growing network of developers in almost every country representing more than 1.5 million companies across healthcare, manufacturing, technology, financial services, retail and more. It's also a social network of sorts for developers. Many fear that Microsoft will use its ownership of GitHub to see what projects are popular, and then launch rivals of its own. GitHub raised $350 million and we know that the company was valued at about $2 billion in 2015. Its also donated numerous software to the open-source community, including Visual Studio Code, PowerShell and the Microsoft Edge JavaScript Engine. The stepping down of CEO Chris Wanstrath past year created slight feelings of unease, and a replacement is yet to be found for him.

"In other words, not only should sceptics not be anxious about Microsoft unduly favouring their own platforms, they should also be excited that, more than any other potential acquirer, Microsoft is likely to push the individual and community aspects that make GitHub so unique".

Over on The Register, results of a poll suggest that people are less than keen on the idea of Microsoft snapping up GitHub. Microsoft's deep pockets can, at least, ensure that GitHub stays active for a long time.
