Melania Trump visits detention centre as immigration vote looms

China has ramped up tensions with Donald Trump

"What is the objective of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct", Trump said in a tweet on Thursday as he renewed his call for a change in Senate rules to allow legislation to move with a simple majority. We are also going to count on Congress, obviously, but we are signing an executive order in a little while.

The Department of Justice on Thursday asked a federal judge to change the rules governing the detention of immigrant families who enter the country illegally, seeking permission to detain children in the same facilities as their parents.

"This was a communication issue where the leadership compromise bill omitted key provisions that had been agreed upon beforehand", Meadows spokesman Ben Williamson said in a statement.

Trump said he couldn't change the policy of separating children from their parents at the border.

"We are keeping families together", Trump said from the Oval Office while flanked by DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Vice President Mike Pence. Some children have been held in refugee resettlement centers for months before being released to a parent, relative, or foster family.

Trump pointed to those images in his meeting, saying theyd "affect everybody" but that he was torn.

"The lawmakers have to sit down and they have to do something because our country can not continue to run like this", Mr Trump said.

President Trump also tweeted at 10:41 A.M. ET on Wednesday that the situation was "Democrats ['] fault", but that he was "working on something".

He had tried to blame Democrats for the separations policy and force them into concessions, including funding for a wall he wants to build along the border with Mexico. "Republicans want security. But I am working on something - it never ends!" he wrote.

U.S. President Donald Trump is misrepresenting the scope of his executive order that would halt his administration's policy of separating children from their parents when they are detained illegally crossing the U.S. border. "I didn't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated".

Schakowsky joined House Democrats, including John Lewis and Pramila Jayapal, and immigration advocates held a fiery press conference demanding the Trump administration immediately end their policy to separate families, June 20, 2018, in Washington.

Navarro told reporters, citing the trade imbalance and China's campaign to acquire USA technology "by any means necessary". A counter punch was swift in coming, with a statement from Beijing on Friday night that it would "strike back forcefully".

Trump's order also directs the attorney general to "prioritize the adjudication of cases involving detained families".

Because any illegal border crossing is prosecuted, parents and children are separated during the legal process.

Nielsen repeated her calls for lawmakers to act.

Almost all of the families, and many others, have officially requested asylum, citing the incessant violence in their home countries. That's according to aides who demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation publicly.

Ryan said Thursday morning that reuniting families was a priority but didn't say how it would happen. Trump quickly reversed course to back the bill and swooped into the Capitol for a late huddle on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT) with Republicans.

In an interview Tuesday, Sessions said numerous adults who are bringing children with them are not related. If those options are exhausted, authorities must find the "least restrictive" setting for the child who arrived without parents.

The president warned there are criminals who use children as tickets to enter the U.S. Other recent rulings, upheld on appeal, affirm the childrens rights to a bond hearing and require better conditions at the Border Patrols short-term holding facilities.

The agency's network of immigration jails for single adults is much larger, because ICE leases detention facilities and vacant cells from states and counties across the country.

With their parents in federal jail, children are sent to detention centres.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
