Justin Trudeau Criticizes Trump, Says Canadians 'Will Not Be Pushed Around'

Donald Trump took to Twitter after the G7 summit accusing Justin Trudeau of dishonesty

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has asked U.S. representatives not to endorse the joint communique put out by the Group of Seven leaders after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

"For Putin, this is return on his investment, and it's safe to say that his investment has paid off beyond even his wildest dreams", he said in a statement to CNN.

He described Trudeau's actions after the G7 summit as a "sophomoric play".

"It's going to stop, or we'll stop trading with them", the president said at a news conference on the second day of the G7 summit in Quebec.

"I have made it very clear to the President that it is not something we relish doing, but it something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we will also not be pushed around". He said gender equality must "cut through" everything the G-7 does.

Trudeau and other leaders had given closing press conferences and announced a US -backed joint G7 statement. At the meeting, Mr Trump's counterparts brought binders of figures to the session devoted to trade in an attempt to persuade him that his belief that the rest of the world was unfair to America was mistaken.

With respect to the North Korea summit, Trump said that it would be a "one time shot" for Kim Jong-un but he is hopeful that the meeting would work out. "Very dishonest & weak", he said of Trudeau. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did". But if steps aren't taken, he said, the penalties would be severe.

And German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted Sunday that Trump had partly "destroyed" Washington's trusting relationship with Europe by pulling out of the joint communique.

Trudeau said he had told Trump "it would be with regret but it would be with absolute clarity and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that the Americans have unjustly applied to us".

Trudeau said Canada wasn't backing down. "We don't think that that is a useful or productive way to do business, and perhaps we refrain particularly from ad hominem attacks when it comes to our relationship with our allies".

"What we did this weekend was come together, roll up our sleeves and figure out a consensus language that we could all agree to", Trudeau said in the town of La Malbaie where leaders have been meeting since Friday morning.

She said: "If there are to be any conversations about Russia's future in relation to this particular group, they have to change their ways, they have to change the route that they are taking and the sort of activity they are involved in". He reiterated his longstanding view that the USA has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends".
