Israeli strikes Hamas in Gaza after 'projectiles' fired

Razan Najar the 21-year-old volunteer medic killed during protests on the Israel Gaza border

"It's for women, too".

Razan al-Najjar was allegedly shot dead in Israeli fire on Friday.

Wearing a white uniform, "she raised her hands high in a clear way, but Israeli soldiers fired and she was hit in the chest", the witness, who requested anonymity, told Reuters.

Two rival UN Security Council resolutions on Israeli-Palestinian tensions in Gaza failed to pass muster Friday, as a draft sponsored by Kuwait drew a veto from the United States and a US -authored measure condemning Hamas was unusually unpopular, getting only one vote from its sole sponsor. He said he was anxious and asked her not to go to the border area Friday but she refused.

On Saturday, U.N. agencies and officials expressed their outrage in a statement that described the killing of "a clearly identified medical staffer by security forces during a demonstration as particularly reprehensible".

Israeli warplanes have carried out a series of fresh airstrikes across the Gaza Strip.

"We witness a lot of attacks by the Israeli forces - paramedics and journalists are targeted", she said.

Israel said its soldiers have only opened fire on people trying to break through the border under cover of protests, and has blamed the group Hamas for orchestrating the violence. They aim to draw attention to the 11-year blockade by Israel and Egypt of the coastal territory and to press refugee claims to lands lost when Israel was established in 1948. Over 260 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in that time. Haley criticised the proposal for making no mention of Hamas, saying that "the text criticises [the] excessive and indiscriminate use of force by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, when in fact it is Hamas that fired 70 rockets indiscriminately into Israeli towns this week".

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks with Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon before a Security Council vote on an Arab-backed resolution for protection of Palestinian civilians during a Security Council meeting at U.N. headquarters in Manhattan, New York, U.S., June 1, 2018.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the man was killed but officials gave no further details on the incident which comes at a time of heightened tensions between Israel and the Palestinians.

Nevertheless, one person in Sderot was injured by flying shrapnel that landed in the city after the interception; residents in the Gaza Belt region have only a 15-second window in which to reach a safe space before a rocket or mortar lands in the vicinity.

On Friday, the Palestinians protested for the 10th week in a row.

But the military said in a statement that "thousands of rioters" had gathered at five locations along the border, "burning tires adjacent to the security fence and attempting to damage security infrastructure". One Israeli army vehicle was sacked on, and Palestinians planted a grenade that exploded on the Israeli side of the fence, the military said.

"Now Razan became a story", said her mother, Sabreen Alnajjar, 43.

Israeli soldiers Friday killed one Palestinian and injured at least 100 others protesting in Gaza along the fence that separates the territory from Israel, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
