Infuriating Moments From the White House Briefing on Family Separation

US President Donald Trump- flanked by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Vice President Mike Pence- signs an executive order to end family separations at the border

The upstate lawmaker, who attended Tuesday's meeting on immigration with Trump and other GOP House members on Capitol Hill, said Congress should fix the law that separates children after their parents are charged and the president should drop the policy.

Until Wednesday, the president, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and other officials had repeatedly argued the only way to end the practice was for Congress to pass new legislation, while Democrats said he could do it with his signature alone.

The effort would mark a dramatic departure for an administration that has been insisting, wrongly, that it has no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because of the law and a court decision.

President Trump will reportedly sign an executive order to end his own administration's "zero tolerance" policy of separating migrant parents from their children at the U.S. -Mexico border, The New York Times reports.

President Donald Trump indicated he would take action shortly to both improve security on the border and help keep families together, speaking briefly with reporters Wednesday.

The order does not say where the families will be detained, or whether children will continue to be separated from their parents until the facilities are ready. This cruel policy needs to end now but we need workable solutions that can address this specific problem long-term. Many professionals are anxious about what is happening to the more than 2,300 youngsters who have been separated from their parents by the Trump administration.

Melania was joined by all four of her living predecessors - Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Rosalyn Carter - in condemning the policy.

"The Trump administration will not win on this one and it should reverse course today", O'Reilly tweeted earlier this week.

Mr Cruz's bill would double the number of federal immigration judges, authorise new temporary shelters to house migrant families and limit the processing of asylum cases to no more than 14 days - a goal immigrant advocates say would be hard to meet.

The person said Trump called the Justice Department Wednesday morning asking for the draft order. He said the Democrats are outraged over family separation, because they want to return to the harmful "catch and release" policy.

But even after the meeting, it was unclear which of two rival immigration bills being brought by Republicans Trump favours.

In the House, GOP leaders scrambled Tuesday to produce a revised version of the broader immigration bill that would keep children in detention longer than now permitted - but with their parents.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters he was reaching out to Democrats for bipartisan backing, since the proposal would need to reach a 60-vote threshold to advance in that chamber. Under the Obama administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation.

The House is to vote later this week on two bills that address broader immigration issues to protect young immigrant "Dreamers", who have been living in the US illegally since childhood, from deportation and fund Trump's border wall. "Bill O'Reilly said this is terrible".

What's next for children already separated from their families?
In April, Attorney-General Jeff Sessions adopted a "zero tolerance " approach to illegal border crossings at the US-Mexico border. The Texas Civil Rights Project works to document the separations in the hopes of helping them reunite with the children.
