Egypt goalkeeper El-Hadary becomes oldest player in World Cup history

Saudi Arabia have ended their 11-game winless streak at the World Cup in dramatic style courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Egypt in Monday's Group A clash in Volgograd.

Saudi Arabia should have been level five minutes before the break when Ahmed Fathy was penalised for handball just inside the box, even though the ball was sacked at him from close range.

Egypt fielded Essam El Hadary in their goal - and at the age of 45, he became the oldest ever player to figure in a World Cup.

Egypt lost their first two matches 1-0 to Uruguay and 3-1 to Russian Federation, while Saudi Arabia were beaten 5-0 in the tournament's opening game by the hosts then lost 1-0 to Uruguay.

It was an opening half of record achievements and firsts.

Saudi Arabia continued to push through Salem Al Dawsari, who completed a run from his own half to the edge of the Egypt box before uncorking a right-footed blast that flew over Al Hadary's crossbar.

That save kept Egypt up 1-0, but he couldn't go 2-2 on penalty kicks.

Egypt suffered losses in its first two matches with Mohamed El-Shenawy in net.

After the restart, the intensity of the game dropped but Hattan Bahebri nearly put Saudi Arabia into the lead with a volley from an acute angle but his strike going just over the bar.

Saudi Arabia turned the ball over in the midfield, with the ball played over the top by Abdalla El Said to Salah.

With less than five minutes to the end of the first half of the game, Juan Antonio Pizzi's men pressured the Egyptian defence to win a penalty that was validated by the Video Assistance Referee.

Salah is also clearly not fully fit, but managed to score two goals in his two appearances, one from the penalty spot.
