Almost 200 missing after Guatemala volcano eruption

Almost 200 people are missing and at least 75 have been killed since Guatemala's Fuego volcano began erupting over the weekend, officials said Tuesday.

The eruption forced the evacuation of more than 3,000 people, and 1.7 million people in Guatemala have been affected by Sunday's explosion.

Authorities in Guatemala have released otherworldly photos of the area around a recently-erupted volcano covered in white ash, as nearly 300 people are declared missing or dead after an eruption.

Conred spokesman David de Leon said the volcano first erupted around midday Sunday, billowing smoke and ash miles into the sky.

President Jimmy Morales has been criticized on social media for passively waiting to react to offers of global aid.

"Basically there's no houses left, and to my assumption there's nobody left there ... except the people doing the search and rescue", he said. The death toll has risen from 69.

Firefighters enter the rescue area near Volcan de Fuego, or Volcano of Fire in Escuintla, Guatemala, Tuesday, June 5, 2018. But late in the afternoon, the country's disaster agency announced it was suspending the search again because of flows of volcanic material and falling rain.

The official number of those missing now stands at 192, a preliminary figure because nobody knows how many people were on the mountain when El Fuego erupted on Sunday around midday.

Firefighters said Wednesday the chance of finding anyone alive amid the still-steaming terrain was practically nonexistent 72 hours after Sunday's volcanic explosion. The images show lava shooting into the air as a glowing flow of molten lava floods down the mountain and a cloud of boiling ash lands on villages.

The volcano has registered a number of minor eruptions over the years, and no evacuations were ordered as scientific experts reported the activity was decreasing.

The 3,763-meter Volcan de Fuego is one of several active volcanoes among 34 in the Central American country. One More Child's Vice President Andrew Tattrie said members have been keeping the organization up to date with what's happening.

According to Pet Rescue Report, Benitez said, "I rescued some clothing. and my dog who is my whole soul". A lot of them lost nears and dears including parents, spouses, children, brothers, and sisters. There are many people who are helping us, but we have absolutely nothing.

Sergio Cabanas, director of the disaster agency, said Tuesday night at a news conference that 192 people were listed as missing.

Officials said the intense heat of the volcanic debris only allowed rescuers to identify 17 bodies, and others were unrecognizable.
