Trump’s Lawyer Invited to Classified Briefing on Investigation of Trump

Sen. John Kennedy calls on Mueller to end Russia investigation ‘atmosphere of rumors

Critics, including top congressional Democrats, argue that Republicans want to use the information to undercut the Russian Federation investigation, which is now being led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The New York Times reported separately this week that at least one government informant met several times with Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, both former foreign policy advisers for Trump's Republican campaign.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, held two unusual classified briefings for senior lawmakers of both parties in the wake of the Republican president's claim.

Besides, if the FBI and Justice Department tipped the vote toward anybody in 2016, it was toward Trump, when FBI Director James B. Comey announced shortly before the election that he had reopened the email investigation.

Democrats have warned that Trump's fixation on the issue - he has tweeted about it repeatedly - suggests he is attempting to undermine the year-old investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with his campaign.

Intelligence officials are horrified that the White House has sanctioned the naming of the supposed informant, an American who teaches history in England, saying this will make it much harder to get information about threats to national security.

The Justice Department answered Trump's tweeted demand by announcing that an existing investigation by the Justice Department's inspector general will now "include determining whether there was any impropriety or political motivation" by the FBI.

He said Democrats don't want that because they like loose voting rules, since they benefit from voter fraud. "Many aspects of the investigation are factually and legally interconnected: they involve overlapping courses of conduct, relationships, and events and rely on similar sources, methods, and techniques".

On Trump's broader point that the Obama administration interfered with the Trump campaign to help Democrat Hillary Clinton win, evidence is lacking on that front, too.

However, the presence of Flood, Trump's White House lawyer for the Russian Federation investigation raised eyebrows.

"There's never been a Gang of Eight meeting with that kind of White House presence", he said. They did nothing. They were anxious that Trump refused to divest himself of his businesses or release his tax returns or health information.

"Meanwhile, the Associated Press revealed this week that the president recently told a confidante that he wanted "'to brand" the informant a "spy, ' believing the more nefarious term would resonate more in the media and with the public'".

Clapper was then asked why Trump did not "like" the Federal Bureau of Investigation monitoring Russians potentially trying to penetrate his campaign.

In a statement, House Speaker Paul Ryan wouldn't say what he learned, but said he looked forward to the "prompt completion" of the House Intelligence Committee's work now that they are "getting the cooperation necessary".

Indeed, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer slammed the decision to hold a meeting on the classified information as "highly inappropriate", accusing the White House of making the information-sharing political. The FBI director at the time was James Comey, and while we heard plenty about Clinton's emails before the vote, we had no idea that such a mature investigation of the Trump campaign was underway.
