The Sun Will Become an Enormous Dusty Nebula When It Finally Dies

New research suggests that the sun will transform into a planetary nebula, which among the most lovely and striking objects seen by astronomers, some shining bright enough to be seen across distances of millions of light years.

This perplexing, apparent contradiction posed "a long-standing mystery" about the end-of-life stages in low-mass stars, the global team of researchers wrote in the study.

One day our sun will die. A new model predicting the lifecycle of stars revealed the sun will flare up into a bright planetary nebula, destroying Earth in the process.

By the time the core reached the required temperature of 30,000 degrees Celsius in those models, the outer layers would be long gone, and dispersed into the gas and dust that drifts between the stars.

As a star meets its end, it ejects up to half its mass into space creating an envelope of gas and debris and exposing the star's core.

Scientists have finally figured out what will happen to our sun when it dies 10 billion years from now. This is what makes the planetary nebula visible. This is precisely what needs to happen for a bright and visible planetary nebula to form.

In fact, this new model shows that "the sun is nearly exactly the lowest mass star that still produces a visible, though faint, planetary nebula", notes a news release from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, which led the project.

An worldwide team of scientists believes that the sun is going to become a massive ring of luminous, interstellar gas and dust which is also known as a bright planetary Nebula.

"The envelope can be as much as half the star's mass", Zijslra explains.

According to Zijlstra, such an event exposes the star's nucleus which is getting out of fuel, shutting down before finally dying. The planetary nebula will shine for about 10,000 years.

The discovery also solves a problem that scientists had approximately 25 years ago.

They're named planetary nebulae not because they actually have anything to do with planets, but because, when the first ones were discovered by William Herschel in the late 18th century, they were similar in appearance to planets through the telescopes of the time.

The new research suggests that the sun will transform into a planetary nebula - a massive glowing globe of gas and dust. This has become a source of conflict for the past for 25 years.

New models show that once the ejection of the envelope is complete, the heat of the stars increases up to three times faster as compared to the previous models. But a new model suggests the sun will go out with some style, creating a planetary nebula visible from millions of light-years away, reports Ian Sample at The Guardian. "We even have found out what the Sun will do when it dies!" said one of the researchers Albert Zijlstra, Professor at the University of Manchester in Britain.
