Subtropical Storm Alberto could be a rainmaker, but not for Texas

Subtropical Storm Alberto could be a rainmaker, but not for Texas

Subtropical Storm Alberto formed on Friday morning just east of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, and it's expected to eventually strengthen as it spins north across the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. So the odds of the system ever becoming a hurricane appear low. That general northward movement is expected for the next couple of days as Alberto works its way through the Gulf of Mexico before it turns to the northwest Monday.

Alberto is not a fully tropical system, with most of its worst weather on its eastern side. Kennedy said the worst of impacts in Marion and Alachua would be from late Saturday night through Sunday.

Per NHC, an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the disturbance Friday afternoon, if necessary.

The rain won't fall uniformly across the area, however. Heavy rain will likely begin to affect the central Gulf Coast region and the southeastern United States later this weekend and continue into early next week.

Another great resource would be the National Weather Service in Mobile. But on any given day, there will be breaks in between the rounds of rain.

Rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible across the Florida Keys and southern and southwestern Florida.

The weather service noted that those totals could climb higher - even double - given the slow movement of Alberto so far.

Therefore, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through that time.

Red flags warning of unsafe surf conditions are already flying along some beaches.

For now, I wouldn't give up your weekend plans. Those currents can sweep swimmers out to sea. Flooding due to the high water table from all the rain last week is the main concern. NWS officials also said isolated tornadoes could also occur as Alberto approaches.

Surf heights of 5 feet or more will be possible.

Make sure you've got Live Alert 19 if you're traveling to the coast this weekend for the latest advisories, radar imagery, and any severe weather alerts if they're issued.
