States Sue Government Over New Car Emissions Standards

EPA Chief Scott Pruitt said standards on model year 2022 to 2025 vehicles should be revised

"The only way we're going to overcome that is by reducing emissions", Gov.

Specifically, that proposal calls for model year standards to be frozen from 2020 through 2026 and for all air conditioning refrigerant leakage, nitrous oxide, and methane emissions to be exempt from all tailpipe Carbon dioxide compliance standards while stripping California's authority to designate independent tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions.

California leads multistate coalition in...

When the auto industry was on the ropes during the financial crisis ten years ago, the Obama administration in exchange for bailout funds extracted a promise from the vehicle companies that they would achieve a fleet-wide fuel efficiency of 54.5 miles per gallon on new cars by 2025.

"Outlaw Pruitt" also, it is likely, is meant to allude to the EPA administrator's frequent violations of federal expense, travel, and security protocols, and, well, good taste.

"We applaud the attorney generals for this action, and we look forward to supporting their defense of the clean auto standards".

"The EPA can not stop Americans from taking action on climate change", United Nations special envoy for climate action and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

In April, the EPA said that the aggressive emissions rules set for model years 2022 to 2025 under President Barack Obama were inappropriate and would be revised. Of the 10 legal cases that have reached a conclusion, Becerra said his office has lost none of them.

A final proposal is expected to be issued within the next week, though in an e-mail to the Los Angeles Times, EPA spokesperson Liz Bowman would only say that, "The Agency is continuing to work with NHTSA to develop a joint proposed rule and is looking forward to the interagency process".

Australia hoping to convince India to play day-night Test
The two-Test tour against Sri Lanka concludes at Manuka Oval in Canberra in a match to be staged from February 1 to 5. Adelaide Oval won't host an ODI on Australia Day next year, while the fate of the day-night Test remains in doubt.

The suit, filed by California's attorney general in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, goes after the EPA for its intention to do away with more stringent rules the EPA adopted in 2016.

Passenger cars as a whole are losing out to bigger luxury SUVs in sales trends, according to Edmunds, which collects information on automobile markets.

"The states joining today's lawsuit represent 140 million people who simply want cleaner and more efficient cars", Brown said in a statement. The next day, Environment America and our supporters delivered a citizen citation to Administrator Pruitt for harming our nation's health and heading in the wrong direction.

Twelve other states participating in the lawsuit - including NY - have followed California in setting more stringent emission standards.

The vehicle emission standard that California and the other jurisdictions are attempting to keep in place was a hallmark achievement of the Obama administration's effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions. At the time, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt dubbed the Obama administration's decision "politically charged", saying it ignored the reality of imposing the new rules on carmakers.

The crux of the lawsuit is that the EPA acted "arbitrarily and capriciously" when choosing to revise the standards, thereby failing to "to follow its own regulations" and violating "the Clean Air Act".

"We don't know what position the EPA is going to take on that", Persampieri said.

This fight is clearly still just in its early stages, and it will be watched closely as its repercussions will be felt around the world, starting right here in Canada.
