Daniel Ricciardo takes Monaco win despite engine problems

No thanks Vettel and Hamilton in discussion ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix

World champion Lewis Hamilton said after the race that the event "wasn't really racing", and Alonso - who missed last year's Monaco GP while competing in the Indy 500 - said he was underwhelmed by how the current cars felt around the principality. "Two years in the making - I finally feel like the redemption has arrived".

Daniel Ricciardo took a dominant pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday, softening the blow for Red Bull after his teammate Max Verstappen failed to even start qualifying, having earlier crashed in final practice.

We were just cruising around from lap six, literally cruising.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, last year's race victor, finished second - easing off towards the finish to save the tyres - to cut Lewis Hamilton's overall lead to 14 points after six of 21 rounds.

Fernando Alonso had to retire his McLaren when his gear box began smoking, but the yellow flags waving while they got him out of the way stopped any overtaking and brought the speed down for a bit; and then a virtual safety auto five laps from the end, after Charles Leclerc shunted Brendon Hartley's Toro Rosso, meant Ricciardo's lead was protected for just a little bit longer.

"I think I can show more emotion today than yesterday", Ricciardo (pictured diving into the swimming pool to celebrate at the Red Bull Energy Station) said of his first win in Monaco. "This is probably the most boring race ever".

Poor Ricciardo's loss of power a third of the way through the race was simply brutal for him.

Webber said: "I don't think Seb would be in love with the idea".

Vettel conceded he didn't have the package to take it to Ricciardo. We had to survive with that problem all race.

The Brit mentioned in Wednesday's press convention that he'd be "all the way down to race with whoever", however was equally hesitant to say he'd accomplice up with Vettel anytime quickly as a result of conflict of characters.

Vettel had issues himself with a wearing tyre limiting his ability to really push. Meanwhile, McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne will be starting 12th after being the sixth fastest in the initial runs.

However, his team also warned the 20-year-old, who crashed again in practice, to keep his overtaking clean for the rest of the race.

"I have done everything I can so far, so let's finish the job. We don't mind if Red Bull are quick here, because there are more tracks like Barcelona [where Hamilton won last week] and we'll try to capitalize on those ones".

Neither man could match the Australian's pace on the hypersoft tyres, with Vettel 0.229 seconds slower.
