Black men arrested at Starbucks settle with the company

The two black men arrested for not ordering anything in a Philadelphia Starbucks have settled with the city for $1 each.

The arrest of Rashon Nelson and Robinson on April 12 was yet another case of racial profiling, as they were led away in handcuffs and accused of trespassing after the manager called police, stating the men refused to buy anything or leave when really, they were just waiting to meet the third person in their group who hadn't arrived.

Police released the men hours later without charges.

"Starbucks will continue to take actions that stem from this incident to fix and reaffirm our values and vision for the kind of company we want to be", Starbucks Chief Executive Kevin Johnson said in a statement.

The company plans to close more than 8,000 stores in the U.S. on 29 May for anti-bias training.

In its announcement on Wednesday, " Starbucks stated its agreement with Mr. Nelson and Mr. Robinson "will enable both sides to move forwards and keep on to speak and research ways of avoiding similar happenings at any Starbucks place.

The AP adds, "Robinson and Nelson, who grew up in an economically depressed section of the city, said the settlements are a good start, aimed at transforming their community and creating the types of opportunities that did not exist when they were younger". "This agreement is the result of those conversations, and I look forward to seeing the fruits of this effort in the coming months and years". "Starbucks will continue to take actions that stem from this incident to fix and reaffirm our values and vision for the kind of company we want to be".

Sainsbury's, Walmart's Asda to create United Kingdom supermarket powerhouse
The deal would be the largest in the United Kingdom supermarket sector since Morrisons acquired the Safeway business in 2004. Part of the merger it to make sure they are protected from that, and also from the growing rise of the discounters".

"This was an incident that evoked a lot of pain in our city and put us under a national spotlight for unwanted reasons".

Details of their financial settlement with Starbucks are confidential, though the parties said they agreed to work together to "develop specific actions and opportunities".

In a joint statement with Mr Nelson and Mr Robinson, Starbucks announced that it had reached a separate financial settlement with the men earlier this week.

Also, the men will be given the chance to discuss their experience and share their recommendations for changes at Starbucks with former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

They have also been offered the opportunity to complete their undergraduate degrees through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross previously defended the officers' action, saying they "did absolutely nothing wrong". We all recognize the importance of communication about differences and solutions, and that we will be measured by our action not words.”.
