Bus flips on its way to Masters golf tournament in Georgia, driver charged with DUI

A man was charged with driving under the influence after a bus he was driving to the Masters golf tournament overturned Thursday, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The bus was en route to the world-renown golf tournament, which started at the Augusta National Golf Club Thursday morning.

Photos from the scene showed multiple cops responding to the scene, as the black bus sat on its side - crushing a wire fence.

"Five of those victims were in serious condition and two were in fair condition", Augusta University Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. Phillip Coule said. The bus first ran off the right side of Interstate 20, then flipped into the median when the driver overcorrected to the left. Doctors Hospital reports that their trauma services team was activated at 9:04 a.m. and is treating nine patients whose conditions range from critical to good.

The driver was hit with a DUI charge after flipping the bus Thursday morning.

Plowman said he felt poorly behind other wounded passengers in addition to for Experts ticketholders because it was shut down after the wreck stuck on Interstate 20.

A Georgia state trooper said passengers told investigators that the driver veered off the roadway twice before he swerved a third time and caused the bus to overturn. Wright said a few passengers suffered broken bones and head injuries.

All seven people being treated at AUMC are adults. That's between the Appling-Harlem and Grovetown exits.

Jet Executive Limosine owns the tour bus, GSP said.

The crash caused I-20 to shut down in both directions, but the interstate later reopened. Westbound traffic has since cleared but eastbound traffic is still heavy with single lane traffic being diverted to the shoulder.

News 12 has been told at least 5 people have already been transported to the hospital.
