Snap rolls out revamped Spectacles. But will Snapchat users buy them?

Hardware has the potential to be a particularly profitable avenue for Snapchat, as it can enable new services, be sold at robust profit margins, and is ultimately harder to competitors to clone.

Unsurprisingly, the Spectacles V2 resembles V1, but it does come with very small changes.

The biggest new feature for this year's Spectacles, though, is the inclusion of water resistance.

Unlike the wild colors of the initial Spectacles, the new models are available in more muted colors, Onyx, Ruby and Sapphire.

Additionally, the new Spectacles is water-resistant up to 1 meter deep for around 30 minutes, according to Recode. Which means taking it for surfing would be unfair but they will work perfectly fine in pool parties and rain dance.

As Digital Trends reports, Spiegel stated in his interview for the Wired magazine that Spectacles were developed separately from the Snapchat app, but that there is the intention, in the future, to pair these two products. CEO, Evan Spiegel reveals that the company will release a new version of its Spectacles this week. Videos record in 1216 x 1216 pixels, whilst photos are taken in 1642 x 1642. There's no option in capturing video and images in standard quality. The company behind Snapchat managed to drum up plenty of excitement for its hands-free camera when vending machines for the accessory began popping up all over the world past year, but that hype didn't ever translate into sales.

Snap has launched a new version of its Spectacles than can take photos as well as shoot videos. It syncs with your phone by just using Bluetooth and the videos/images transfer is now 4 times faster compared to the old version of spectacles.

The first Spectacles had a 9 second/video average transfer time, but the latest Spectacles now take below 3 second/video. The Spectacles will be available through Snap's website. Snap is also working with the online lens company Lensabl to provide prescription lenses for those of us who are not gifted in the vision department.

The price will be set somewhere around $300.
