He retired from public life a year ago but has since appeared several times at royal engagements alongside Queen Elizabeth.

His spin bowling was so good that the Australian cricketing legend Sir Don Bradman said he should play for England.

The royal was last spotted out in public on 5th March, carriage riding around Windsor Castle.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to King Edward VII's Hospital in Marylebone, central London, for the surgery. He is likely to remain there for several days, the palace said.

His final solo engagement was in August a year ago, when he reviewed a parade of Royal Marines outside Buckingham Palace in his capacity as Captain General of the corps.

But Philip does not walk with the aid of a stick as the Queen Mother did and was spotted last week driving himself around Windsor Great Park, leading to speculation he may have a problem with torn cartilage. In June 2017, the Duke was admitted to hospital for an infection stemming from a pre-existing condition but was back in working order for celebrations at Sandringham over the Christmas holiday.

Tyson Fury dismisses Joshua-Parker fight as 'joke'
As the home fighter and the headline name on the card, Joshua is set to pocket the majority of the fight purse. But Wilder did cause controversy over the weekend with a vile remark about wanting "a body" on his record.

There's a busy few months coming up for the royal family, as the Duke and Cambridge prepare to welcome their third child, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marry next month.

In May 2014, he had a "minor procedure" on his right hand, with the treatment carried out inside Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace has said it will provide updates "when appropriate" but has not provided details about the nature of the surgery.

There will be physiotherapy exercises to do at home and crutches are needed for about four to six weeks.

Prince Philip has been a constant and often mischievous presence at royal functions for decades and is well-known for punctuating royal pomp with a taste for off-colour jokes.

Buckingham Palace said in a short statement: "The Duke of Edinburgh has undergone a successful hip replacement operation".
