Nintendo's New President Marks Start of New Dynasty

Nintendo Switch

Furukawa now holds multiple positions at Nintendo, having been with the company for nearly 25 years. The 46-year-old Furukawa has experience with Nintendo since 2012 and now serves on the boards of both Nintendo and The Pokémon Company.

During the press conference in Osaka, Furukawa talked about bringing out Nintendo's full potential, and said he would balance Nintendo's traditions: originality and flexibility.

But as the console's success became more assured the company upped its prediction to 14 million and then 15 million as the year went on. He will be replaced by Shuntaro Furukawa, the head of global marketing.

In terms of software sales, over 68.97 million video games have been sold thus far. While the company had a strong lineup of games last year to drive hardware sales and this month introduced cardboard accessories created to broaden the product's appeal, it only has one new big-name title - Super Smash Bros. - scheduled for release this year. Kimishima-san oversaw the reveal and subsequent launch of the Switch, putting the company back on the right track after the Wii U failed to catch on.

The company also recently redesigned its app, so now, free users can enjoy a new visual look and on-demand playlists. Spotify is launching a new free service that lets users pick and choose songs off of selected playlists.

Sales for the console are up to 17.79 million as of March 31, according to the company's latest earnings report.

And it's not just the hardware that's selling: Some key Nintendo software titles for the Switch are blockbusters in their own rights. Finally, Nintendo's mobile games business, which now has Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, saw a 64% year-on-year rise to 39.3 billion yen (£25 million).

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima, who took on the role after the death of Satoru Iwata in 2015, announced his retirement today, saying he believes the company needs to be led by younger management.
