Maya Angelou honored with Google Doodle on her 90th birthday

Maya Angelou

Those who read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings know that Angelou was sexually assaulted at the age of seven, and that experience rendered her non-verbal for five years. It was on her 40th birthday, April 4, 1968, that Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis.

"Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken, it's how she did it all".

"My mother's principal message was one of inclusiveness; that despite our ethnic, religious and cultural differences, we are more alike than unalike", writes Johnson, "She saw all our differences in language, orientation and perspective as an indication of the richness of our imagination and creativity, and as elements of our nature that we should celebrate". "She believed that we are all images of God, no matter how we look or what name we use to call upon the Divine and Sacred Being", he said.

In 1940, Angelou moved to San Francisco with her mother and brother. "And then I thought I would never speak again, because my voice would kill anyone". During that period, she immersed herself in literature and poetry.

Even though she was awarded a scholarship to study #Music And Dance, Maya dropped out of high school and began to work as the first female cab conductor. Today's Google Doodle is an animated poetry reading of Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise", read by Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, Laverne Cox, and several others.
