Former South African President Jacob Zuma's corruption case adjourns until June

The ex-president also insisted that he did not agree with the way the party has treated him.

He was flanked by former cooperative governance and traditional affairs minister Des van Rooyen and Eastern Cape ANC heavyweight Andile Lungisa as he walked up the steps to the court building. The former leader was recently deployed to KwaZulu-Natal, the province with the biggest number of ANC supporters, to drum up support during a voter-registration drive.

The court adjourned the hearing until June 8.

Zuma said he chose to resign in order to prevent bloodshed as no life should be lost because of him.

Welcoming the news that Jacob Zuma was going to face prosecution, Archbishop William Slattery, spokesperson for the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference told the Catholic publication "America" it is "very hopeful that the wheels of justice are still turning in South Africa". He sat roughly a metre distant from his co-accused in the dock: Christine Guerrier, the unlucky woman seconded by French arms company Thales to represent the firm.

Guerrier flew from Paris to attend the case.

Following the postponement yesterday, Hoffman said that given the track record of Zuma's legal team, he foresaw they would lodge a review proceeding in respect of the decision not to uphold the representations made by Zuma. The application is expected to be filed on May 15.

JACOB Zuma supporters have started their walk from King Dinizulu park to the Durban High Court.

Maya moved to NY in 1959, to concentrate on her writing career, and joined the Harlem Writers Guild. This autobiography and her subsequent works earned her global recognition and numerous awards.

That is something Mr Zuma's local supporters are threatening to leverage.

Hundreds came out to demonstrate their allegiance to the former president, many dressed in the African National Congress (ANC) colours of green and gold and others carried signs.

This, despite a statement by the party's highest decision-making body, the national executive committee, earlier this month. ANC members were allowed to show support in their personal capacity, but not when wearing ANC regalia.

The statement did not mention Zuma by name.

"They want to shut my mouth", he said, calling for radical economic transformation and the return of land from white people to black South Africans.

Last month, national prosecutors announced that corruption charges related to the arms deal would be reinstated against Zuma nearly a decade after they were dropped. "This is a just a political conspiracy".

He was replaced as president by his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, who has promised a robust campaign against corruption and also seeks to rebuild a ruling party whose moral stature has diminished since it took power at the end of white minority rule in 1994.

He said that he had become a victim of opposition parties who‚ unable to perform in parliament‚ drove their agenda in court.
