Facebook Messenger Will Soon Let You 'Unsend' Messages Just Like Mark Zuckerberg

Want To Lead A De-stressed Life? Quit Facebook Says Study

That said, even some conservatives admit that Facebook could have done a better job informing its users of what it does with their data.

A day after it came to known that Facebook secretly deleted messages sent by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook said it is planning to roll out the feature for everyone. "We did so in full compliance with our legal obligations to preserve messages".

Reuters/Brian SnyderFacebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks to reporters at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Facebook's latest move comes a month after Elizabeth Denham, the United Kingdom information commissioner, suggested social networks may be forced to reveal detailed information about how and why users were targeted for political advertising.

Although the ability to automatically delete sent texts hadn't been previously available, Facebook says it now plans to make it available to all users.

Currently, users can only delete messages from their own inboxes which will still show up in the recipient's thread.

Amazon Alexa works with United Kingdom police force
Now, families with Echo devices in their home can do just that, thanks to a new "Alexa Announcements" feature that's rolling out. The WeMo Mini Smart Plug lets you control whatever device is connected to it - such as your lights - with Alexa voice commands.

Facebook needs to do more than just identify political ads and who's behind them, a change it announced on Friday. Zuckerberg also expressed his support for the Honest Ads Act bill now working its way through the Senate-despite Facebook having previously lobbied against it.

Facebook on Friday announced new moves it says will help combat foreign interference in USA elections, the New York Times reports.

Sandberg said Facebook has launched an investigation and audit to determine whether user information has been compromised by other firms. This may take some time. Facebook said that the feature exists for corporate security reasons related to the Sony hack of 2014, but it yet feels elitist, especially in the light of broader critiques of the privacy practices of the company.

The news comes as Facebook grapples with the revelation that some 87m users may have had their personal data harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting group that worked on the 2016 USA election and Britain's European Union referendum vote. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives' messages.

"The mitigating factor is that this data is voluntarily given to Facebook by its users, who should have known the objective of its use by the platform, but Facebook should have been a lot more forthcoming about that too", argues Ed Morrissey at Hot Air. "We should have done this sooner - and we're sorry that we did not", the representative offered as an apology.

Facebook Messenger now offers a Secret chat feature wherein messages can be timed to self-destruct with durations ranging from 5 seconds up to 1 day.
