President Trump on Tuesday declared that the USA is "very strongly" taking tough measures to protect the U.S. election system from Russian meddling in the 2018 midterm elections and beyond.

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will speak at 3:30 p.m. ET Tuesday.

President Donald Trump on Monday boasted of plans to "counteract" the Kremlin's influence in upcoming elections. "But certainly there was meddling and probably there was meddling from other countries and maybe other individuals".

"The fact is we have been mistreated as a country for many years and we are just not going to let it happen", said Mr. Trump, who for decades has called for get-tough trade policies to get better deals.

During a news conference with his Swedish counterpart, Trump also promised his proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum will be applied in a "very loving way", declared the North Koreans were "sincere" in their renewed push for talks and insisted the USA would rebut Russian efforts to interfere in the 2018 congressional contests. One of the things we're learning, it's always good to have a paper back-up system of voting.

"We're doing a very very deep study and we're coming with some. very strong suggestions on the '18 election".

The comments come less than a week after Trump announced that the United States will impose new tariffs, which function as a tax on imports, on steel and aluminum and make no exception for close allies such as Canada and the EU.

"Thanks to Vladimir Putin, we've gotten a wake-up call", Coats told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "I like seeing it", he said.

"The Russian bear came out of hibernation and was hungry", and the country "is likely to continue to pursue even more aggressive attacks, with the intent of degrading our Democratic values and weakening our alliances".
