Counter-terrorism police called in as Russian exile found dead in London

Boris Berezovsky

The police have not yet confirmed his identity officially, but said: "An investigation is under way following the death of a man in his 60s in Kingston borough".

The Met said officers believe they know who the man is, but he is yet to be formally identified.

Glushkov was an associate of Boris Berezovsky, a Russian oligarch and Kremlin critic who died in London in 2013.

The man found on Monday is believed to be Russian businessman Nikolai Glushkov.

Last year, Glushkov appeared on a list published by the Russian Embassy in London of Russians wanted for serious crimes and whom the United Kingdom had refused to extradite.

The cause of death is not yet clear and the London police said the counter-tourism unit was leading the investigation into the death "as a precaution" given the man's associations.

There is as yet no evidence to link this incident to the nerve gas attack in Salisbury, although the next-door neighbour said they had not seen Mr Glushkov since then.

On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Theresa May said it was "highly likely" that Moscow had attempted to assassinate Sergei Skripal in Salisbury on March 4 using the nerve poison Novichok, developed by the Soviet military in the 1970s and 1980s.

Berezovsky was found hanged in his Berkshire home in 2013 in an apparent suicide. He said: 'I was told the way it would happen.

Another notable case involved Alexander Perepilichny, a Russian banker turned whistleblower who died during a jog near his home in Surrey.

A close friend of the deceased said to the Russian radio station Govorit Moskva that he may have died of AIDS, adding that Glushkov never hid his homosexuality.

Mr Glushkov gave evidence in the high profile court battle between Berezovsky and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in 2011.

In light of the attack on Skripal, the British government said police will look again at the deaths of more than a dozen Russians, including Berezovsky.

Glushkov had lived in London after his release from prison in 2004 after a five-year jail term due to a money laundering conviction in Russian Federation.

"Too many deaths [of Russian emigres] have been happening".

Relations between Britain and Russian Federation have been strained since the murder in London of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking green tea laced with radioactive polonium-210.

"You have the deaths of Boris and Badri over a short period of time".

According to Russian newspaper Kommersant, he was found by his daughter with "strangulation marks" on his neck.
