South African police raid Gupta home "crime scene"

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule delivered a letter to the embattled president at his official residence in the capital, Pretoria, officially informing him of the party's decision to "recall" him at a meeting of its top leadership body, the national executive committee (NEC), reports say.

Zuma's presidency has been marred by corruption scandals, slow economic growth and record unemployment that have fuelled public anger.

South Africa's opposition parties want the national assembly to debate a motion of no confidence in Zuma this week and for parliament to be dissolved immediately after that ahead of an early election.

"I need to be furnished on what I've done", the 75-year-old president said.

Elite South African police (The Hawks) have arrested a member of the Gupta family, in an early morning raid on the luxury Johannesburg home of the Gupta brothers, wealthy friends of President Jacob Zuma accused of influence peddling, the state broadcaster said.

At the time, Ramaphosa cancelled an emergency urgent NEC meeting that was called for last week Wednesday in Cape Town, describing his talks with Zuma as "fruitful and constructive".

Zuma is expected to respond to the recall on Wednesday, and could be ousted in a parliamentary vote of no-confidence if he clings to office.

Magashule is expected to formally communicate the outcomes of the meeting to journalists at noon on Tuesday.

Zuma retains significant support inside the party and at a local level in many parts of South Africa.

Zuma's silence has fueled speculation of an increasingly desperate power struggle behind the scenes with deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, whose election to the head of ANC in December marked the beginning of the end of Zuma's tenure. If the motion were held and a majority of legislators voted against Zuma, the entire Cabinet would also have to resign, dashing Ramaphosa's hopes of a carefully managed transition.

Zuma faces 783 criminal charges, including money laundering, racketeering and fraud linked to a government arms deal procurement deal in 1999.

Zuma's second and final term was due to end around mid-2019.
