Newcastle fans rave over Benitez decision v Bournemouth

It seems nearly implausible that Rafa Benitez, a fierce advocate of regular squad rotation, won't name the same staring XI that vanquished Manchester United for the match against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Newcastle have slipped down two places to 15th after results elsewhere on Saturday, but are unbeaten in their last four Premier League outings.

Dwight Gayle scored twice in the opening 45 minutes to give the Magpies a deserved lead, but the Cherries scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to nab a point.

But the Cherries were far better after half-time and had a goal back in the 80th minute through Adam Smith before Dan Gosling fired in the equaliser just before the 90th minute.

Benitez stuck with the same team which surprised Manchester United a fortnight ago and the game plan appeared to have worked perfectly as his players expertly absorbed pressure from the hosts before clinically hitting them on the break.

The breakthrough came soon afterwards in the 17th minute when Jonjo Shelvey released Perez down the right flank. Thus, any efforts that net three points for either Bournemouth or Newcastle will be huge to create some breathing room from the clubs trying to stave off a relegation battle.

Dan Gosling scores Bournemouth's second goal.

Manager Eddie Howe responded to the two-goal deficit by bringing on England striker Jermain Defoe for his first appearance since he suffered a fractured ankle in December, but it was fellow substitute Smith who put them back in the game.

Perez and Shelvey spurned gilt-edged chances to make it three either side of a fine Dubravka save from Steve Cook, and those wasted opportunities ultimately proved costly as Smith fired a stunning strike in off the bar before Gosling struck with a confident side-foot finish as a previously composed Newcastle defence crumbled.

Bournemouth would have a handful of chances in the five minutes of added time, but the scoreline would remain level at 2-2.
