Donald Trump Sides with General Kelly in Security Squabble with Jared Kushner

White House: Security Clearance Crackdown Won't Affect Kushner's Job

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser - who is leading White House efforts to jumpstart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks - is fighting to retain his access to highly classified information.

The disclosure marked the latest development in an ongoing drama over Kushner's clearance, which has been held up amid questions about his background check. But Jared Kushner's right in the middle of that, and he's an extraordinary deal-maker. In the case of Kushner, a wealthy NY businessman, his financial links have taken a long time to examine. Kelly has told associates he wants the matter resolved, but problems have persisted in granting him a full clearance.

But on Friday, CNN revealed that Kushner hasn't obtained a full security clearance partly because of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, and that Kushner likely won't receive full clearance while the probe is underway.

The White House has declined to confirm whether Kushner's clearance would be revoked on Friday, with Kelly saying only that he has "full confidence in his ability to continue performing his duties in his foreign policy portfolio". The phone call was first reported by The Washington Post. He left it up to Kelly to "make that call" regarding whether to waive Kushner's security clearance.

The report comes as a deadline, set by Kelly, passed on Friday for top White House aides to secure a permanent security clearance or risk losing access to classified information. But the President's advisers have determined that taking that step would be drastic and cause deep rifts within the intelligence community and among Trump's top aides.

In a memo to top law enforcement an intelligence officials a week ago, Kelly said that beginning on February 23, he would 'discontinue any Top Secret or SCI-level interim clearances for individuals whose investigations or adjudications have been pending since June 1, 2007 or earlier'.

White House: Security Clearance Crackdown Won't Affect Kushner's Job

Donald Trump on Thursday and Friday, when asked by VOA during brief encounters with reporters whether he wanted his daughter to meet the North Koreans, did not respond.

"That will be up to General Kelly. Nobody ever reports that", Trump said. I will let the general, who is right here, make that call. But Vanity Fair says that by issuing a red line, Kelly has pulled off a "political masterstroke" by training more spotlight on the president's ethics, which will endure whether he stays or goes. But he gets zero.

Sanders did not rule out Trump using his executive authority to grant Kushner a permanent security clearance, which would circumvent the traditional process run by the White House office of personnel security. Kelly has interpreted that as a wide-ranging mandate that would include Kushner, the person said.

On Friday, at the White House news conference, Trump complained that the vetting process takes "months and months and months" even for people who don't have complex financial issues.

'Here's the thing, ' the Republican official said. "There is no truth to any suggestion otherwise".

In addition, Kushner's actions during the transition have been noted in the guilty plea of former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, who admitted he lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
