Spotify hit with $1.6 billion copyright lawsuit

Daniel Ek

The lawsuit "alleges that Spotify is using Petty's "Free Fallin", the Doors' "Light My Fire", and tens of thousands of other songs without a license and compensation".

It seems that along with new opportunities, 2018 is bringing some of the same old headaches for music-streaming giant Spotify, as it has been announced today that they have been slapped with a $1.6 billion suit by Wixen Music Publishing.

The suit seeks damages of $150,000 apiece for more than 10,000 songs represented by Wixen that it says are unlicensed.

Music streaming giant Spotify has reportedly been slapped with a $1.6 billion lawsuit. In addition, Spotify will also have to create some sort of method to identify and license songs properly.

Spotify is hitting back by questioning whether or not Wixen is actually authorized by those artists to take these aggressive actions.

Texans GM Rick Smith taking extended leave of absence
With Smith stepping away, the need for Texans owner Bob McNair to choose between firing one or the other is mitigated. The most notable incident was Smith signing QB Brock Osweiler without consulting O'Brien prior to the 2016 season.

Spotify refused to comment on the lawsuit.

Wixen also alleges Spotify has "knowingly, intentionally, and repeatedly" reproduced those songs over the Internet to California residents.

Wixen's complaint, filed December 29 in California federal court, contends, "Prior to launch, Spotify struck deals with major record labels to obtain the necessary rights to the sound recording copyrights in the songs by offering the major labels, in many cases, equity stakes in Spotify: But Spotify failed to properly obtain the equivalent rights for the compositions".

In May, Spotify settled a class action lawsuit with various songwriters for $43 million over claims that they hadn't adequately paid licenses.
