Russia: US Call for UN Meeting on Iran "Destructive"

Nikki Haley Iranian regime is'now on notice

"[The U.S.] continues to pursue a policy of open and implicit interference in the internal affairs of other states - doing it unabashedly, openly, under the slogan of caring for democracy and human rights, directly infringing on the sovereignty of other states", Ryabkov said, according to the Associated Press.

At a meeting of the UN Security Council convened at the United States' request Iran's permanent representative, Gholamali Khoshroo, said that the discussion of his country's internal affairs was beyond the UN SC realm of competence and that the United States abused its powers of a permanent member.

The Trump administration has taken a vocal approach to the situation in Iran, where at least 21 people have been killed and over 1,000 arrested as Iranians take to the streets to protest against the regime.

Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, has portrayed the Security Council meeting as an American attempt to violate Iran's sovereignty.

She added: "Freedom and human dignity can not be separated from peace and security".

"The world has witnessed the horrors that have taken place in Syria, that began with a murderous regime denying its people's right to peacefully protest", Haley said.

Russia, a council member, has close ties with Iran, which isn't.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo has slammed the USA government's recent attempts to intervene in the domestic affairs of the Islamic Republic. Kazakhstan is the Security Council president through January. "They do so shamelessly", Ryabkov was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency. And Iran's United Nations envoy, Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo, complained in a letter to the Security Council president Wednesday that Trump's "absurd tweets" had "incited Iranians to engage in disruptive acts".

Ambassadors for the 15 countries sitting on the Security Council met privately before an emergency session called by the United States over what U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the "troubling and risky situation in Iran".

Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said such actions could provoke a backlash, after six days of anti-government protests in Iran.
