Intel to ship 802.11ax chipsets in 2018

Every device these days depends on Wi-Fi and a new standard the Wi Fi Alliance is working on should make it more reliable. Samsung

Faster Wi-Fi - Intel announced new 802.11ax chipsets for mainstream home routers and gateways that will result in faster, smoother content streaming, online gaming, video calls and more. 802.11ax should help in congested situations, though, with its ability to manage more connections more intelligently.

Intel may have been one of the first to produce 802.11ax chips. There are other chip companies in the connectivity space as well, and Intel making their 802.11ax chips available doesn't alone guarantee mass adoption of the standard.

"Celeno´s Everest solution leverages upon the newly introduced capabilities of the 802.11ax standard including downlink and uplink MU-OFDMA, downlink and uplink MU-MIMO, as well as 802.11ax higher order 1024 QAM modulation, while leveraging Celeno´s unique AX.Lâ"¢ technology to introduce a superior, cost optimized, 4.8Gbps performance.

Analyst firm IHS Markit forecasts 802.11ax-enabled device shipments will increase from a relative trickle of 116,000 units in 2019 to a flood of 58 million in 2021.

"There are already more than eight devices in the average U.S. home" using Wi-Fi, said Kevin Robinson, vice president of marketing for the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Man City's Ilkay Gundogan: Eye contact key to Sergio Aguero goal

Airtel revises Rs 448 and Rs 509 packs to counter Jio
Other benefits include unlimited local and STD calls, 100 SMS per day, and free subscription to Vodafone Play. The company announced that the users will get 50 per cent more data per month on the same prices as earlier.

This time frame is also emphasized in an e-mail by the Wi-Fi Alliance to The Verge.

In the e-mail, the Alliance said that most companies will not manufacture devices compliant to 802.11ax this year.

Product certification is the process that pushes industry to commit to a standard, and it will happen next year.

Intel is helping OEMs to smoothly transition to the new standard by upgrading its WAV500 Series home Wi-Fi chipsets to 802.11ax without needing to change the host SoC. Chipsets upgraded to 802.11ax will also offer backward compatibility with existing Wi-Fi technologies. This is due to product certification.

Qualcomm announced the availability of 802.11ax chips in February last year, and even though Intel is coming on board with their 802.11ax chips this year, it may still be a while before certified products hit the markets.
