Indian Medical Association Goes On Strike, Protesting National Medical Commission Bill

Indian doctors go on strike over alternative medicine plan

In Bengaluru, around 200 medical students under the Karnataka Medical Students and Youth Doctors Association gathered on Monday to hold a protest.

The National Medical Commission Bill, 2017, which seeks to replace the Medical Council of India with a new body, was referred to the Standing Committee on Tuesday.

After the new bill, private colleges will no longer need permission to increase number of seats in undergraduate and postgraduate seats as they would be able do that on their own.

Healthcare services at many private hospitals across the country were affected after the doctors suspended OPD services and even postponed surgeries.

The bridge course will be decided upon at a meeting between the proposed National Medical Commission, the Central Council of Homoeopathy and the Central Council of Indian Medicine. The protests come as the Bill is set to be taken up for discussion in Parliament on Tuesday.

Tandon, meanwhile, said: "The government through this Bill, is trying to bring in two categories in medical education - the urban sector and the rural sector". The IMA has opposed the bill saying it will "cripple" medical professionals' functioning by making them answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators.

There is also a strong resentment against the examination that will be conducted by the NMC for medical students after completion of the course to be eligible as practising doctors.

The association said the new bill makes provisions for only 40 per cent seats in a private medical college to be regulated as far as fee was concerned while for the rest, the private colleges are free to fix the rates.

Dr Veeranna said the appointment of members to the commission is not by election, but rather by nomination by the Union government.

"In its present form, the Bills is detrimental to both the public and modern medicine in India".
