Hollywood actresses, writers launch project to fight sexual harassment

The women announced the launch with a lengthy letter of solidarity published as a full-page ad in the New York Times and the Spanish-language paper La Opinion on Monday.

Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and Jennifer Aniston are among hundreds of Hollywood women who have formed an anti-harassment coalition called Time's Up.

Some of Hollywood's most powerful women have teamed up to launch an initiative aimed at combating sexual harassment inside and outside their industry after an avalanche of allegations set in motion by the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

It will include a legal defence fund for victims across different industries, backed by Dollars 13 million in donations, and will advocate for legislation combating workplace harassment.

As the Times reports, the group is "leaderless, run by volunteers and made up of working groups"-each of which focusing on different areas of the problem or specific populations under threat".

"If this group of women can't fight for a model for other women who don't have as much power and privilege", Rhimes told the Times, "then who can?"

Drafting of legislation to punish companies that tolerate sexual harassment and to discourage nondisclosure agreements in such cases.

The meetings reportedly began in October, shortly after Harvey Weinstein was first accused of sexual assault.

And it calls on women to wear black at Sunday's Golden Globes as a statement against gender and racial inequality, as well as raise awareness about the group's efforts. For years, we've sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colours and our handsome faces and our glamour.

"We want all survivors of sexual harassment, everywhere, to be heard, to be believed, and to know that accountability is possible", the letter read, noting that Time's Up wasn't just limited to helping those in Hollywood.

Witherspoon said that in the past women have been "siloed off from each other".

Producer and legal defence fund donor Katie McGrath said that many women had realised from early on that they needed to establish what they wanted to achieve, "and what was going to be required in order to shift and pivot from this horror to structural change".
