Fog delays 400 trains and 500 flights

Delhi Airport

A thick fog on the first day of the new year threw travel plans of hundreds of fliers into disarray at the Delhi airport as flights could not land or take off for several hours.

Not only this, dense fog has engulfed the entire northwestern plains.

More than 40 flights were diverted and over 90 flights were affected at Delhi airport before flight operations got back to normalcy, the source said. Five domestic and seven global flights were delayed, while one has been cancelled in the wake of thick fog, ANI reported.

On Saturday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.2 degree Celsius; the maximum temperature was recorded at 22.6 degree Celsius.

Departures require a visibility of at least 125 metres, while planes can land in visibility below 50 metres if the pilots are trained in CAT IIIB, a system of advanced technology for low-visibility landings that allows aircraft qualified to land in visibility of 25-50 metres. This is also an improvement, as RVR was in the range of 50-100 metres in the last two days.

The flight operations at the airport were halted for about five hours.

"The sky will remain clear during the day, with dense fog in the morning", an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Poor Air Quality Index has also contributed to the fog in Delhi and NCR.
