Apple is revising iBooks app to better compete against Amazon

That could mean that Apple plans to make discovering new books through the Books app easier, possibly with categorical tabs and book cover art throughout the digital store. The first visages of the revised experience is found in the iOS update 11.3, which is only available to developers. iBooks is now called Books, which is a small subtle change to the overall branding.

Apple is ready to take on in the digital book market again, years after regulators forced the iPhone maker to back down from an earlier effort to challenge the e-commerce giant's lead. Apple will redesign their e-reading app with a "simpler" interface aimed at highlighting books you're currently reading in a "Reading Now" section. There's no official date for the debut of the new app, but it's reportedly slated to be released in the coming months. As of February 2017, Amazon had claimed over 83% of the e-book market, while Apple's share had fallen from 11% to 9% from 2015 to 2017. Apple recently moved its audiobook offerings from the Music app to the iBooks app, but having a dedicated tab for audiobooks will make them more easily accessible for customers.

The online retailer won a big competitive advantage several years ago when the U.S. Department of Justice sued Apple and several publishers for colluding to artificially raise the price of books.

Another sign that Apple is looking to breathe new life into its ebooks business was the December hiring of Kashif Zafar, the former senior VP of Amazon's audio book unit Audible.

However as recent data shows Amazon almost monopolizing the US e-books market, Apple appears ready and willing to jump back in and reclaim its former, competitive edge.
