UN whacks fresh sanctions on North Korea

In the last two years North Korea's provocative despot Kim Jong-Un has conducted more missile tests than his father Kim Jong-Il and his grandfather Kim Il-Sung in 27 years.

The new sanctions approved in the council resolution include sharply lower limits on North Korea's oil imports, the return home of all North Koreans working overseas within 24 months, and a crackdown on ships smuggling banned items including coal and oil to and from the country.

A week after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called out Russian Federation and China for their support of Kim Jong Un's regime, the 15-member Security Council passed its fourth resolution against Pyongyang in 13 months on Friday.

North Korea's test on November 29 of its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile yet was its 20th launch of a ballistic missile this year, and added to fears that the North will soon have a military arsenal that can viably target the US mainland.

The measures are in response to North Korea's test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 28 that marked an advance in Pyongyang's drive to threaten the USA mainland with a nuclear strike.

Hailing the unity of the Security Council vote and referring to leader Kim Jong Un, Haley said that, "we will continue to match the Kim regime's choice of aggressive action with actions of worldwide sanctions".

It had also called for the halt of what they say is "brutal sanctions" after a previous set of sanctions imposed in the country after its September 3 test constituted genocide.

The United States has led the drive at the Security Council to tighten sanctions aimed at piling pressure on Kim's regime to come to the negotiating table.

Speaking before the Security Council vote, analysts said the new sanctions could have a major effect on the North's economy.

Resolution 2397 cuts exports of gasoline, diesel and other refined oil products by a total of 89%, Haley said. And it bans all countries from exporting industrial equipment, machinery, transportation vehicles and industrial metals to the country.

The resolution does not halt the supply of crude oil from China to North Korea, even though the United States strongly pressured China to halt such shipments.
