NJ director Bryan Singer fired from Queen biopic

X-Men director and famed Hollywood producer

Director Bryan Singer has hit back after being fired from the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic, insisting studio Fox refused to let him take time off to care for his "gravely ill" parent.

Bryan Singer has accused Fox of refusing to give him time off to deal with health issues of one of his parents, which is why he says he was sacked from Queen biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody".

"While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving", he said.

The confrontations between Singer and Malek are said to have never become "physical", but the director did throw "an object" (chair? mic stand? glitter?) at his front man at one point. At the time, the studio credited the halt in production to Singer's "unexpected unavailability".

Whatever Singer's reasons are for abandoning Bohemian Rhapsody, he'll now be forced to watch Fox and producer Graham King hire someone else to finish the film.

THR reported that the studio chose to remove him from their project because he didn't show up to the set and there was a conflict between himself and Rami Malek, who will star as Freddie Mercury, the central character of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Much like Solo - which was nearing the end of its shoot when Lord & Miller parted ways with Disney - Bohemian Rhapsody only had roughly two weeks before wrapping principal photography. The film, which had been filming in London, had seen cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel step into the director's chair on the days when Singer was absent. According to a report by IndieWire, Singer's absence had pushed Malek to complain to the studio.

Tom Hollander, who plays Queen manager Jim Beach, also is said to have briefly quit the film because of Singer's behavior, but was persuaded to return, according to one source. When news broke, it was detailed that the studio fired Singer under the "pay or play" portion of his contract after he failed to arrive on set.

Fox promises a new director will be named soon.

The movie is still expected to meet its scheduled December 2018 release.

Singer, 52, is best known for directing the X-Men films and The Usual Suspects.
