IOC suspends Russian Federation from the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games

IOC ban Russia from 2018 Winter Olympics over doping

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Tuesday that it has suspended Russia's Olympic team from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics over allegations of doping.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who won two gold medals in fencing for West Germany during the 1970s, was disturbed with what was uncovered.

To invite individual Russian athletes under strict conditions (see below) to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018.

The IAAF Council unanimously votes to extend the ban on the Russian athletics federation, but offers an Olympic lifeline to athletes training outside the Russian system to compete in Rio as neutrals.

The IOC also confirmed that these "neutral athletes" will not get to wear any Russian uniform - or hear their country's national anthem - if they win a gold medal.

The Olympic and Russian flaghs at the closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Games in 2014.

The IOC's decision comes 18 months after it had refused an outright ban of Russian athletes at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and told worldwide sports federations to decide individually on the participation of Russians in Brazil.

IOC President Thomas Bach said: "This was an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport".

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and International Olympic Committee confirmed Rodchenkov's account.

To exclude the then Minister of Sport, Mr Vitaly Mutko, and his then Deputy Minister, Mr. Yuri Nagornykh, from any participation in all future Olympic Games.

The U.S. Olympic Committee supported the IOC's decision.

WADA president Sir Craig Reedie commended the IOC's "informed decision" to sanction Russia and said the agency would be "eager to collaborate" in examining which Russians might be eligible to compete in South Korea.

Meanwhile the credibility of the Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, who ran the Moscow anti-doping laboratory before fleeing previous year and revealing what he knew to McLaren, was recently enhanced by the Oswald commission, who confirmed that he was a "truthful witness". Rodchenkov appeared in filmmakers Bryan Fogel and Dan Cogan's critically acclaimed documentary, Icarus, an expose on the Russian state-sponsored doping system.

To withdraw Mr Dmitry Chernyshenko, the former CEO of the Organising Committee Sochi 2014, from the Coordination Commission Beijing 2022.

The Winter Olympics will be held from February 9-25. It wants the scientist extradited from the United States, where he is a protected witness.

The IOC will issue operational guidelines for the implementation of these decisions. They've taken away 11 of Russia's 33 medals.
