40 killed in ISIL-claimed attack in Kabul

Afghan security forces stand guard near the site of multiple blasts in Kabul

India on Friday stalwartly condemned Thursday's "cowardly suicide terror attack" at the media news agency and the cultural center in Kabul due to which more than 40 innocent lives were taken and left many more injured.

Some of those who lost their loved ones in the attack expressed outrage over the performance of government and accused them of incompetence.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it targeted the center because it "sends students to Iran to learn from the ayatollahs".

But Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said later that the blasts were aimed at the Shi'ite Tabayan cultural center near the news agency's office.

American and global officials condemned the attack and reaffirmed their support for the government of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, which has been struggling to contain rising violence, ethnic tensions and political unrest amid a protracted insurgency.

Kabul Blast Targeted Shiites In Afghanistan, Also Creates Safety Concerns For Journalists
It was unclear what militant group was behind the attack, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility. In a statement released by the presidential palace, Ghani says: "The terrorist have killed our people".

Days of bitter cold ahead for Midwest, Northeast
Wind chill advisories or warnings are in effect for parts of several states, including Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and Maine. Specifically, the move will allow officials to bring in National Guard resources with forecasters predicting more snow.

Ten people were also killed in a suicide bomb attack near the compound of Afghanistan's intelligence agency in Kabul on Monday.

Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said an unknown number of suicide attackers set off an explosion outside the center before storming the building when they set of more explosives in the basement.

Ghani said the explosions were attacks against Islam and "all human values". CNN reports nearly 100 people were at the cultural center at the time for the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. According to Afghan officials, the bombing caused at least 41 deaths and over 80 additional injuries, and the incident was just the latest in a string of violent attacks against Shiite Muslims. The likelihood that the attack was carried out by Islamic State bombers fit an alarming pattern of deadly incidents that have targeted Kabul's Shiite community, including mosques and other facilities, prompting the government to arm and train local Shiite men as mosque guardians.

In October, at least 39 people were killed in an attack on a mosque belonging to the Shia minority. It also says one journalist was killed and others were wounded.
