United States sets final date for Nicaraguan immigrants' protected status

Trump ends protected residency for thousands living in U.S. legally from Nicaragua

Assuming the Republican-controlled Senate approves Nielsen's nomination, she will have until Thanksgiving Day to make a decision on TPS for Haiti and until early January to do the same for El Salvador. The Department of Homeland Security claimed that conditions in Nicaragua have improved enough to cancel the program. Those countries are among nine that Reuters reports TPS now covers; the other five are Nepal, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

TPS was created by Congress in 1990 to avoid sending foreign nationals to countries too damaged or unstable to receive them because of natural disasters, armed conflict or health epidemics. DHS can renew the program for up to 18 months at a time.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took the same tack, accusing the administration of "senseless prejudice" and denouncing the TPS decision as a "cowardly assault on thousands of families in communities across the nation", reports the Washington Post.

For Salvadorans, the largest TPS holders, and the elimination of the program would have significant consequences.

They also lamented during a call with reporters November 7 that Elaine Duke, acting secretary of Homeland Security, put off a decision on TPS for 57,000 Hondurans for six months, saying more time was needed to determine if they could remain in the USA because of adverse social and economic conditions in their homeland.

"People have been here for 25 years", Shannon said, "and for 25 years they have been working with a legal temporary visa".

Many hope the Trump administration will decide against eliminating TPS. But a senior administration official said Monday that Citizenship and Immigration Services would not automatically forward their personal information to immigration enforcement agents, and they would not be a priority for arrest and deportation. She said that there is a lot uncertainty, especially for those with little options to adjust their status and get permanent residency.

She said the lives of thousands of Nicaraguan families who "help make the United States vibrant" would be disrupted and that both the US and Nicaragua would be harmed.

Unfortunately, not all TPS holders fall under this category.

"I'm not leaving. No matter what, I'm not leaving" said Osario, who has been in the US for 26 years, the last 19 as a TPS holder.

"The only rationale for something like this is if people can't be sent back physically", the Center's Mark Krikorian said.

Bishop Kevin W. Vann of Orange, California, a member of CLINIC's board of directors, added in the statement that American society is responsible for protecting all members of the human family and that "means TPS should not be revoked until safe return and reintegration can be assured".

"They have roots in this country".

"Although they were born here, we want to keep our children with us", she said.
