Saudi-led airstrikes destroy air navigation system of Yemen's capital airport: spokesman

With the humanitarian situation getting much worse, it appears 2018 will be hard for Yemen as this historical land is plagued with war and disease for another year. The location of these ports would require the crossing of conflict frontlines to reach the northern areas most heavily affected by food insecurity and cholera. The Saudi-led coalition said last week it had closed all air, land and seaports in Yemen to stem what it said was the flow of arms to the Houthis from Iran. This has left the country with critically low stocks of necessary goods, reducing capacity to cope under the current conditions.

Responding, Foreign Office minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon pointed out the United Kingdom was not directly involved with the Saudi-led coalition.

The strike comes just a day after Saudi ambassador to the UN Abdallah Al-Mouallimi agreed to reopen some ports to allow aid in. The United Nations now lists Yemen as the world's number one humanitarian crisis, with 17 million people in need of food, seven million of whom are at risk of starvation.

However, Mr McGoldrick said there was "no indication" yet of the blockade being lifted.

Sweden called for a meeting on the crisis a week ago after the military coalition shut down Yemen's sea and air ports as well as borders in response to a missile attack by the Huthi rebels near Riyadh. The humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged Yemen is now one of the deadliest in the world as starvation and lack of medical supplies leave millions at risk - the Saudi blockade of Yemen has added to the country's woes.

Humanitarian agencies had been successful in preventing starvation and tackling a cholera outbreak that has sickened more than 900,000 people in six months and killed over 2,200. The port is crucial to United Nations aid efforts, as it is a central valve for a significant portion of Yemenis in need. While the language of the resolution calls to "increase efforts to adopt all necessary and appropriate measures to prevent civilian casualties and increase humanitarian access", it does not call for an end to USA support of the Saudi-led coaltion attacking Yemen.

There was worldwide outcry last week when Saudi Arabia blockaded the country's ports after a missile was sacked towards its territory by the Houthi rebels. According to the UN's aid coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, there was no time to wait for a new inspection system to be set up.
