Papa John's slowing growth blamed on National Football League players kneeling

In 2012, he famously said that Obamacare would up pizza prices. So what's going on?

On Thursday, Pizza Hut countered Papa John's claim and wanted to let everyone know that their business hasn't been hurt by Yum Brands' relationship with the NFL.

While it may be a stretch to directly link lagging pizza sales to the protests, there is little doubt that the company has been hurt by a decline in National Football League ratings, analysts say.

Listen, Papa John, if you don't sit down and show some respect for the protests these men are taking part in, squads might start boycotting your whole chain. The average game this season has attracted 14.8 million viewers, down from 15.6 million at the same point a year ago.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had started the national anthem kneeling movement a year ago to show his protest against black people by the police.

Last week, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who threatened to bench any player of his team who would not stand for the national anthem in October, commented that the league is "suffering negative effects from these protests". "The controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country", CEO John Schnatter said Wednesday after the company had released softer sales figures. "More importantly, by not resolving the current debacle to the players' and owners' satisfaction".

"Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership", CEO John Schnatter said.

"We're not seeing impact on any of that on our business", said Greg Creed, chief executive of Yum Brands. Trump has urged his millions of supporters to boycott the National Football League until Goodell mandates all players stand for the anthem.

The NFL has declined to comment.

Restaurant analyst John Gordon says he is skeptical of the NFL's impact.

McDonald's Corp., for example, expects to expand delivery of its burgers, nuggets and fries from 5,000 of its almost 14,000 USA locations by the end of the year.

Domino's, though, said sales rose 8.4 percent at established USA stores during the third quarter. The stock dropped as much as 13 percent the next day.

Late Tuesday, Papa John's reported a lower than expected 1% rise in sales for its North American locations, CBS reported.
