The Arsenal midfielder told Spanish media outlet Marca that he is working towards playing again, but he was told at one point that his career was over and that he would be lucky to be able to walk with his son in the garden.

Santi Cazorla has opened up about the extent of his long lay-off from football, revealing how an ankle injury he sustained in 2013 nearly led to his leg being amputated.

Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla hopes to return to full action by January, with the midfielder out with an ankle injury since October 2016. He underwent left knee surgery in December 2015 and needed another operation a year later because of a tendon injury in his right foot.

However, despite eight operations, the wound fail to heal and became infected.

Santi Cazorla has spoken about the horrific extent of the achilles tendon injury that has kept him out of action for over a year, revealing he nearly lost his foot to gangrene after contracting a unsafe infection.

Santi Cazorla had a skin graft from a tattoo on his arm to rescue his ankle from an infection eating his Achilles tendon.

Browns' sadness taken to a whole new level during trade deadline
After the trade deadline passed, reports emerged that it didn't go through because the Browns didn't file the paperwork in time. At the moment, though, the quarterbacks in Cleveland are still DeShone Kizer , Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan .

How Chelsea should line up vs AS Roma
The Brazil worldwide denied Chelsea forwards Eden Hazard, Alvaro Morata and Pedro Rodriguez on chance after chance. Stephen El Shaarawry's two first half goals left Chelsea with a mountain to climb in the Italian capital.

To make matters worse, Cazorla suffered a serious blood infection that could have ended in the Spaniard having his foot amputated, wasn't it for quick treatment. "There was eight centimetres of it missing".

His achilles tendon and the bone in his foot were both damaged but he is now targeting a return to football early in 2018, although he is still in Salamanca, Spain while he recovers. The player is now in rehabilitation and hopes to return to football in the coming months.

"Everything that I have gone through has not been as simple an injury as people have believed", added Cazorla.

Cazorla signed for Arsenal from La Liga side Malaga in 2012 and has since made 180 appearances for the Gunners.

"I am aiming to return in January, it keeps me motivated".
