AC/DC's Malcolm Young dies at 64 with dementia

Malcolm Young of the rock band AC DC performs at the Met Center in Bloomington Minnesota on the Fly On the Wall tour

"He was older than me - I always looked up to him", Angus Young said of his brother in an interview past year with Rolling Stone Magazine, saying he was "always one to battle through".

Another Young sibling, the AC/DC producer and Easybeats guitarist George Young, died in October at age 70. "As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man", Angus Young said in a statement Saturday.

"It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother", the family said in a statement.

Young died after a years-long battle with dementia, with the legendary Australian rock band confirming the news on Saturday.

The band concludes the message with a simple tribute to Malcolm stating that the guitarist "leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever". The brothers, who were born in Glasgow, Scotland (Malcolm on January 6, 1953), had emigrated to Australia with their family when Malcolm was aged 10 and Angus was 12 years old.

Food Pantry resumes after volunteer becomes 4th victim of Seminole Heights Killer

Van Halen called Saturday, the day AC/DC announced Young's death, "a sad day in rock and roll".

The group signed with Atlantic Records in 1976 - they played New York's punk mecca CBGB on their first US tour - and their reputation grew quickly as albums followed in rapid succession: "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", "Let There Be Rock", "Power Age". The band would become one of the influential rock "n" roll groups of its era. "He was an incredible guitar player & the glue for the band onstage & off". His razor-sharp production cast the band's inherent melodicism into an even greater light, and the album was an global hit that over the years has sold more than 7 million copies in the USA alone. Singer Brian Johnson joined the band in Scott's stead; when Back in Black was released, it went to No. 4 on the Billboard album chart, and eventually sold 22 million copies in the US alone. He was replaced by Brian Johnson, who sings on their hit record "Back in Black".

After "Back in Black", the band eased into a global superstardom that would continue for the next three decades.

Malcolm spent the last three years struggling with dementia, which forced him to retire from the group a few years ago. Angus is still with the band and appeared on their latest tour, the Rock or Bust trek.
