Afghanistan Mosque Bombings Kill 60

At least 30 killed in suicide bombing at Kabul mosque

Suspicion, however, fell on the Afghan branch of the Islamic State terrorist group, which has taken credit for recent bombings of Shi'ite worship places in Kabul and elsewhere in Afghanistan.

"I was in the mosque bathroom when I heard a blast".

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

Four attackers who set off explosions and fired gunshots laid siege to the mosque in the north of the capital for four hours as dozens of men, women and children had gathered for Friday prayers.

In an email to journalists the Taliban said it was responsible for the ambush on the army cadets, taking to five the number of attacks on police and military bases this week that involved the insurgents.

Almost 200 people, mostly security forces, have died in separate militant attacks across Afghanistan this week, making it one of the worst in recent months.

Habib Wardak, a security analyst, SAID that both the Taliban and ISIL "are trying to portray that they have the ability to inflict damage not just to the Afghan security forces and the Aghan government, but also to its global counterparts wherever and whenever they want to".

The militants razed the base in the Chashmo area of Maiwand district to the ground, according to the defence ministry.

A suicide bombing in western Ghor province struck a Sunni mosque, also during Friday prayers, killing at least 33 people, said Mohammad Iqbal Nizami, spokesman for the provincial chief of police.

On Friday, two separate attacks on mosques killed scores of people in Afghanistan.
